You will get involved with the character Lizzie and the puzzling nature of her husbands personality. So, in a sense, I supposed I could not go wrong with this book (which is referred to on the cd).Occasionally, one is totally absorbed by a book and this was such a book. This book gives a strong flavour of life as lived by a young minister's wife on St Kilda. A historic church event reverses the lives of the natives and to an extent of the visitors.
I knew a bit about the island because I have a daughter who is terribly interested in it and has several books on the island's history. The next amazing thing was that the Reverend McNeil and his wife were actaul historical characters, and not just fictional characters that the author used to describe the story. But I just really didn't like the style of writing. She is currently at work on her second novel.
The first thing that amazed me about this book was the author's portarayal of the lives of the Islanders and how bleak it was. For some time I have been fascinated by the St-Kilda archipelago, particularly thanks to the album 'Hirta Songs' by Scottish folk singer Alasdair Roberts, and for many years I have been a massive fan of Scotland in general.
This was a very interesting & moving story. Could be an exceptional book, instead it's back to the drawing board for this one. But even the extreme isolation of their life cannot help them turn to each other and their marriage is increasingly strained. Based on actual facts, this novel is excellent. It is true.
