Aug 6,1992, Art Lawton's world record Muskie, originally thought to have been 69 pounds 15 ounces and 64 1/2 inches long, was discovered to have been greatly exaggerated in size and was officially disqualified jointly by both the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame and the IGFA. Lawry then took the jaw to Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist Frank Pratt.Pratt measured the bones, from which the length of the head could be determined, based on published reports of Canadian researchers. Replacing it was Louis Spray's 69-pound 11-ounce fish caught on Wisconsin's Chippewa Flowage.
Petit wanted to “…screw with Louie…” (Spray) because Petit was still mad at Louie for not paying him for providing Louie with his 1939 ‘world record’ muskie, claimed to weigh 59-pounds 8-ounces, when Louie still lived in Hayward, Wisconsin where he owned another tavern at the time. Those two disqualifications (if they happen) would move O'Brien's 65-pound fish to the top of the world record listings. The fish appears to have been in the same league as the two world-record fish caught in 1949: Cal Johnson’s 67 1/2-pounder from Lac Court Oreilles, and Louis Spray’s 69-lb., 11-oz. “We’ve got these big, fast motors tearing around all our muskie lakes now and these big fish just like to suspend in deep water a couple of feet below the surface in the middle of the lake. As a consequence of that decision, Louie Spray was officially reinstated as the all tackle World Record Muskie holder. “So this was a very, very big fish,” he said.Pratt also compared the jaw to the jaw of Cal Johnson’s mounted 67’1/2-pound muskie, which is on display at the Moccasin Bar. To the right: Louie Spray shows off the 69-pound, 11-ounce Muskie caught on Oct. 20, 1949, which remains the world record. High rates of voluntary catch-and-release fishing on the flowage has created an outstanding fishery for musky in the 20-30 lb. The controversy over Louis Spray's world record musky is in some deep and murky waters. That makes them ready targets for high-speed boat hits.”“Some of these boats go 65 mph. class.
Louie Spray and his Muskie. The two teens came upon the jaw on the sandy beach. specimen from the Chippewa Flowage. Spray was a controversial figure in life for his non-fishing adventures such as bootlegging and he remains a controversial figure in death. Woehler later picked it up. The Muskie was 69-pound, 11-ounces. The fish in turn was disqualified, and Cal Johnson's fish was recognized as the record. He currently holds the world record (pictured here) as recognized by the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of …
Dettloff's own book, "Three Record Muskies In His Day: The Life and Times of Louie Spray," focuses on the unlikely Spray achievement of catching three world-record muskies. “But this (discovered) jawbone appears to be one or two millimeters bigger than the jawbone on Cal Johnson’s fish,” Pratt said.
Spray had earlier caught two world-record muskies, one in 1939 and one in 1940. The current all-tackle world-record muskie measured 60 1/4 inches and weighed 67 pounds, 8 ounces, a fish caught by Cal Johnson in 1949 at …
The latest twist is that three math experts, who were asked by the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame to examine photographs of the musky, are now calling for an independent investigation of Spray's fish. “It looked like it was from a pretty large fish, so I brought it to (friend] Randy Lawry,” he said. “There is no way of knowing how many pounds the fish weighed, except that a robust, healthy fish in that size range is on the order of 55 to 70 pounds,” he added.Pratt placed the jaw next to the jaw of the 50-inch, 42-pound mounted muskie at the Hayward Ranger Station.
The world record musky, at 69 lb. “This is on the order of digging in the sand and coming up with a skull for Cro-magnon man, or walking along the beach in Africa and seeing a dead Coelacanth, which was thought to be extinct for 13 million years, suddenly wash up on the beach. From the jaw’s annual growth rings, Pratt estimated the fish to be about 15 years old, “which is very young for a fish this size,” he said. Singer is a muskie maniac. “This means it probably was quite a robust fish, and that in all likelihood it did not die from disease or old age. The fish appears to have been in the same league as the two world-record fish caught in 1949: Cal Johnson’s 67 1/2-pounder from Lac Court Oreilles, and Louis Spray’s 69-lb., 11-oz. “It’s very similar to that fish.”The discovery “is startling,” Pratt said. The great fish was caught out of the Chippewa Flowage, Wisconsin in 1949. One such investigation was done regarding a record fish caught by angler Louis Spray. Their two children, Erin, 17, and Ryan, 15, “were bored, so we dropped them off on the island known as Miami Beach to explore,” Woehler said. The mount is under plexiglas, so it was hard to get a total measurement on the jaw.
The musky fishery is supported by successful natural … Below is a picture of Art Lawton's Muskie, which was disqualified as the world record.
