He studied first with the Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890–1974) at the Cologne Musikhochschule (1947–50) and later with Olivier Messiaen in Paris (1952–53). Stockhausen invented a method of music notation for his works, using graphs and geometrical figures, in which each note or group of notes is precisely notated, although it also allows for controlled aleatoric elements. Thus this selection of works will be updated.The purpose of these pages is to point out few relevant works only among tens of thousands and to provide some chronological references. He also studied physics (especially acoustics) and phonetics at Bonn University (1953–56). In the 1960s he developed means of electronic transformation, as in Kontakte (1960) and Momente (1962).
