Woody's Peak (elevation, 7986 feet) overlooks the park from its dominion in the Tehachapi Mountains, the dividing line between the San Joaquin Valley and the Los Angeles Basin. The roads are well paved and are a crazy type of narrow. It is only about a 1 hour drive from Bakersfield! Love this place. We did the full hike to the top and back to our car in 2 and 1/2 hrs. But, we went to use the rest room and it was absolutely disguising. The reason for this is because people from Bakersfield and Lancaster decided to come up here every year and leave their trash (you should of seen the pictures in the newspapers trash everywhere in the forest). It's a perfect day. We took a picnic lunch and ate it at a nearby campground. There is a fire pit, bbq and a picnic bench on each site too. The trail heads are marked. Other then that the sites seem clean I just wish the sites had their own trash can on it.Had my daughter's wedding here on the plateau above the mess hall and the reception inside the mess hall.
Several campsites require a fairly sharp drop on dirt to park in campsite. The grounds are well kept and it seems that each campsite has a water spicket for fresh water. To reach the trailhead, follow Water Canyon Road to County Park Road into the campground. Awesome HIKE but this is what the non-locals aren't telling you. Felt a little too remote for us.Nice place to visit if you are looking for a hike. As a local, it is great to have a close-by place to camp. !Pretty well marked paths... some wide like fire roads. !Great place to go and get away. Follow the campground road until you reach the marked trailhead near the south end of the campground. Up until the last hill the going is pretty easy. Can't wait to go up there in the spring and summer and camp!Are you burned out on all things Urban? I think it needs to be cleaned more often. That was nice. Just please be respectful and don't litter nor vandalize anything.Another amazing night spent at Mountain Park.
That's fine with me but the wife and kids would've preferred the option of a real toilet vs the hole in the ground type but whatever overall experience was great. Toilets are chemical outhouses.
