Kepler ran out of fuel and went to sleep in 2018, but scientists are still combing through the observations it made during its epic hunt for planets beyond our own solar system.

NASA/Ames Research Center/Daniel Rutter This week Natalie Batalha, NASA’s Kepler mission project scientist, is in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she will receive the 2017 Lecar Prize from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). These two factors make it a particularly promising candidate for hosting hypothetical life. NASA's Kepler space telescope, the most productive exoplanet-finding spacecraft yet launched, was retired in 2018, after running out of the fuel needed to continue scientific observations. But over its nine years of service, Kepler amassed a huge amount of data — so much so, that scientists are still making new discoveries.

(Credit: NASA/Ames Research Center/Daniel Rutter) In keeping with right ascension's time theme, hours are subdivided into minutes and seconds, and are even written out as minutes (m) and seconds (s). Buried in data from the now-defunct Kepler space telescope, astronomers have uncovered an exoplanet some 300 light-years away that could be a promising home for alien life. The world, named Kepler-1649 c, is just a touch larger than Earth, but instead of orbiting a Sun-like star, it circles a tiny red dwarf, a class of stars known for throwing violent tantrums.

... the space telescope has located more than 2,500 confirmed exoplanets.

The fascinating exoplanet is slightly larger than Earth.

The award, now in its fourth year, recognizes exceptional contributions to the study of exoplanets — planets outside our solar system — and theoretical astrophysics.
