Journalist and Compass host Kumi Taguchi has extensive experience working in television, but producing a show for Instagram from her home took some getting used to. Search query Search Twitter. Understandably, pretty much everything being broadcast live was about COVID-19: stats, facts, figures, dos and don'ts.But I did feel a deep comfort in seeing a familiar newsreader's face each night (for me, it was Juanita Phillips).I wanted to give our audience something similar, a familiar face but in a different space and context.A live touch point in each day for our audience to dig a bit deeper into the rollercoaster ride we were on.I wanted to chat about everything like I would with a friend: over a cup of tea or coffee.I knew I wanted a show to be live and had noticed a rise in broadcasts on Instagram.I was keen to jump in there and test it out as a viable broadcast platform. In its first iteration, we broadcast live each weekday afternoon for half an hour.Over five weeks, we produced 2.5 hours of live content each week and had more than 50 guests join us, including actor Sam Neill and musician Paul Kelly, plus some great ABC personalities, such as Norman Swan, Juanita Phillips, Leigh Sales, Costa Georgiadis, Scott Stephens and Hamish Macdonald, as well as talent from other organisations. We covered topics from arts, sport, mental health, spiritual health, entertainment and even pets.We had some great musical acts play live, including Flight Facilities, Ngaiire, and I Know Leopard. We travelled the globe, touching down with guests from London, Japan, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Vietnam to name a few.Even though it can be easy to see Instagram as lo-fi and spontaneous, we wanted to create a quality, structured show.We came up with daily themes: from 'Check-In Monday' through to 'Fun Friday'.We wanted our audience to have reliability and structure to their weeks, some rhythm amongst all the chaos.Much like any daily show, we had editorial meetings, scripting, debriefs and last-minute guest changes. We had a high hit rate of guests saying yes to come on, which isn't always the case with a TV program.A chat over a cuppa is relatable, whereas a TV interview can seem a bit more intimidating — plus, our guests were stuck at home, too, so we were all in the same boat.We wanted to make sure we did not just make a TV show to put on Instagram. And then the tech: I set everything up myself and we tried a few different devices and methods. It was untested waters so, as well as producing and presenting a new show, we were also testing the platform. And we had instant feedback from our viewers, so we could instantly gauge whether we were tapping into the zeitgeist. We created a concise brief to help them and made sure they knew this was not an interview program — that it was a chance to catch up.We do our best to be relatable and accessible as presenters but there will always a layer between us and the audience. We are shielded, and there is a clear line between our work life and private life.Instagram, though, is such a real medium it demands authenticity and a certain intimacy. It is not about a presenter sharing information or getting information, so the presenter role is sort of flipped on its head. That room is a real source of comfort and privacy for me, a haven to retreat to.Suddenly, my home was open to our audience.
